Collagen peptides are short-chain proteins produced by hydrolyzing native collagen, the main structural protein in skin, bone, tendon, and cartilage. The hydrolysis step breaks the triple-helical structure and cleaves longer chains into smaller fragments. The resulting material is water-soluble and typically has an average molecular weight in the low kilodalton range. Commercial ingredients are often described as hydrolyzed collagen or collagen hydrolysate. Amino acid composition remains rich in glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline, though the ordered helical arrangement is largely lost.
Raw collagen for peptide production comes from bovine hide, porcine skin, fish skin and scales, and sometimes poultry cartilage. The material is cleaned, extracted, and treated with acid, alkali, or enzymes to break peptide bonds. Enzymatic hydrolysis using proteases allows better control of fragment size than purely chemical methods. After hydrolysis, the liquid is filtered, concentrated, and dried into a powder. Source and processing conditions influence color, odor, molecular weight distribution, and amino acid profile.
The distinction between native collagen and collagen peptides matters for behavior in water and in analytical tests. Native collagen is a rigid, triple-helical protein that is largely insoluble in cold water. Peptides lack that organized helix and dissolve readily, forming clear or slightly hazy solutions. Because hydrolysis shortens chains, viscosity falls and gelation behavior changes. The term collagen peptide does not specify a single molecular species; it describes a family of hydrolysates with variable chain lengths and properties.
Quality testing of collagen peptides relies on several analytical methods. Molecular weight distribution is commonly measured by size-exclusion chromatography, sometimes paired with multi-angle light scattering. Amino acid composition is determined by ion-exchange chromatography or reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography after acid hydrolysis, while protein content is estimated by Kjeldahl or Dumas nitrogen analysis. Moisture, ash, and heavy metals are checked against specification limits. These tests help ensure consistency and detect adulteration with other proteins.
Regulatory treatment of collagen peptides varies by country and intended use. In the United States, they are typically marketed as dietary supplements or food ingredients, and certain uses may be generally recognized as safe (GRAS) through self-affirmation or notification. In the European Union, collagen peptides from approved animal sources are considered food, not novel foods, if they have a history of consumption. Health claims linking collagen peptides to joint or skin benefits are not approved in the US or EU. Labeling must list the animal source and may state the protein content.

Storage and stability practices focus on limiting moisture, heat, and contamination. Dry collagen peptide powder is hygroscopic and can cake or brown if exposed to humid air or reducing sugars at elevated temperatures. Sealed containers kept in a cool, dry place are standard, and opened containers should be protected from ambient humidity. Liquid formulations are more vulnerable to microbial growth and may require refrigeration or preservatives. Typical unopened shelf life is around two years, though stability depends on packaging, temperature, and the specific peptide mixture.
Quality control for collagen peptide ingredients combines identity, purity, and composition tests. Molecular weight distribution is a primary specification because hydrolysis determines peptide chain length, which influences solubility and flow properties. Amino acid analysis confirms the expected high levels of glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline. Moisture, ash, pH, and microbial limits are checked to ensure consistent handling and shelf life. No single assay captures every relevant property, so manufacturers typically use a panel of methods.
Species origin is not always easy to confirm in finished hydrolysates because hydrolysis fragments DNA as well as protein. Polymerase chain reaction tests targeting species-specific DNA may fail when the template is too short. Amino acid profiles, stable isotope ratios, and trace element patterns can offer indirect clues, but they are not definitive on their own. Adulteration with cheaper nitrogen-rich ingredients is a documented concern in some protein markets. Buyers often rely on supplier audits, certificates of analysis, and third-party testing to verify source and purity.
Analytical methods for collagen peptides focus on molecular weight distribution, amino acid composition, and purity. Size exclusion chromatography with UV detection is widely used to estimate molecular weight ranges. High-performance liquid chromatography can quantify hydroxyproline after acid hydrolysis. Mass spectrometry provides detailed sequence information for individual peptides. Other tests include moisture content, ash, heavy metals, and microbial limits. The choice of method depends on the specific quality attribute and the required sensitivity.
Storage and handling of collagen peptides require protection from moisture, heat, and light. The powders are hygroscopic and can absorb water from the air, leading to clumping or microbial growth. Typical storage conditions are a cool, dry place at room temperature or below, in tightly sealed containers. Some manufacturers recommend refrigeration for long-term stability. Solutions prepared from the powder are less stable and should be used promptly or preserved according to validated protocols.
Collagen peptides are short chains of amino acids produced by hydrolyzing collagen from animal tissues. The raw material commonly comes from bovine hide, porcine skin, fish skin, or poultry cartilage. Hydrolysis breaks native collagen's triple helix into smaller fragments and increases water solubility relative to intact collagen. The resulting mixture contains peptides of varying lengths rather than a single molecular species; commercial samples are often described by average molecular weight or by a size range. This broad composition affects functional properties such as gelation, foaming, and mouthfeel.
Enzymatic, alkaline, or acid treatments can cleave collagen into peptides. Enzymatic hydrolysis with proteases is common because it allows control over temperature, pH, and reaction time, while the choice of enzyme and raw material influences the peptide profile and amino acid composition. Glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline are abundant in collagen peptides, whereas tryptophan is typically low or absent. Hydroxyproline serves as a characteristic marker for collagen-derived material. Processing conditions also affect color, odor, and taste, which matter for food and supplement applications.
In 2016, firearms resulted in 251,000 deaths globally, up from 209,000 in 1990. Of these deaths, 161,000 (64%) were the result of assault, 67,500 (27%) were the result of suicide, and 23,000 (9%) were accidents. In the United States, guns resulted in about 40,000 deaths in 2017. Firearm-related deaths are most common in males between the ages of 20 and 24 years. Economic costs due to gunshot wounds have been estimated at $140 billion a year in the United States.
=== Fluorescent detection === Fluorescence spectroscopy is one of the most common droplet detection techniques. It provides a rapid response, and, for applicable analytes, it has a strong signal. The use of fluorescence spectroscopy in microfluidics follows a similar format to most other fluorescent analytical techniques. A light source is used to excite analyte molecules in the sample, after which the analyte fluoresces, and the fluorescence response is the measured output. Cameras can be used to capture the fluorescence signal of the droplets, and filters are often used to filter out scattered excitation light. In microfluidic droplet detection, the experimental setup of a fluorescence instrument can vary greatly. A common setup in fluorescent droplet detection is with the use of an epifluorescence microscope. This sometimes utilizes a confocal geometry, which can vary depending on experimental needs. For example, Jeffries et al. reported success with exploring an orthogonal confocal geometry, as opposed to a standard epi geometry. However, other setups for fluorescence detection have been explored, as epifluorescence microscopes can be expensive and difficult to upkeep. Cole et al. have proposed and tested an experimental setup with fiber optics to conduct fluorescence analysis of microfluidic droplets. Fluorescence detection of droplets has a number of advantages. First, it can accommodate a large and fast throughput. Analysis of thousands of samples can be conducted in a short period of time, which is advantageous for the analysis of a large number of samples.
== Reception == In 2017, the company received two awards from the ConsumerLab.com Survey for Top-rated Supplement Brands on Overall Consumer Satisfaction and Top-rated Supplement Merchants on Overall Consumer Satisfaction.
In the Congress of the Yugoslav League of Communists in 1990, Milosević and his subordinate representatives for Vojvodina, Kosovo and the Socialist Republic of Montenegro attempted to silence opposition from the Socialist Republic of Slovenia who opposed the actions taken against Kosovo Albanian leadership, by blocking all reforms proposed by the Slovene representatives. The tactic failed and Slovenia, along with its ally Croatia, abdicated from the Yugoslav Communist Party. This caused the Yugoslav Communist party to fall apart, and then the state of Yugoslavia itself one year later.

== History == The compound may have been synthesised by either Jābir ibn Hayyān in the 8th century or Ramon Llull in 1275. It was synthesised in 1540 by Valerius Cordus, who called it "sweet oil of vitriol" (oleum dulce vitrioli) – the name reflects the fact that it is obtained by distilling a mixture of ethanol and sulfuric acid (then known as oil of vitriol) – and noted some of its medicinal properties. At about the same time, Paracelsus discovered the analgesic properties of the molecule in dogs. The name ether was given to the substance in 1729 by August Sigmund Frobenius. It was considered to be a sulfur compound until the idea was disproved in about 1800. The synthesis of diethyl ether by a reaction between ethanol and sulfuric acid has been known since the 13th century.

As with all amino acids, catabolism of lysine is initiated from the uptake of dietary lysine or from the breakdown of intracellular protein. Catabolism is also used as a means to control the intracellular concentration of free lysine and maintain a steady-state to prevent the toxic effects of excessive free lysine. There are several pathways involved in lysine catabolism but the most commonly used is the saccharopine pathway, which primarily takes place in the liver (and equivalent organs) in animals, specifically within the mitochondria. This is the reverse of the previously described AAA pathway. In animals and plants, the first two steps of the saccharopine pathway are catalysed by the bifunctional enzyme, α-aminoadipic semialdehyde synthase (AASS), which possess both lysine-ketoglutarate reductase (LKR) (E.C 1.5.1.8) and SDH activities, whereas in other organisms, such as bacteria and fungi, both of these enzymes are encoded by separate genes. The first step involves the LKR catalysed reduction of L-lysine in the presence of α-ketoglutarate to produce saccharopine, with NAD(P)H acting as a proton donor. Saccharopine then undergoes a dehydration reaction, catalysed by SDH in the presence of NAD+, to produce AAS and glutamate. AAS dehydrogenase (AASD) (E.C 1.2.1.31) then further dehydrates the molecule into AAA. Subsequently, PLP-AT catalyses the reverse reaction to that of the AAA biosynthesis pathway, resulting in AAA being converted to α-ketoadipate.
=== Structure of the eye === Cornea, at the surface of the eye, is considered to be made of plywood-like structure of collagen, due to the self-organization properties of sufficiently dense collagen. Yet, the collagenous orientation in lamellae is still under debate in this tissue. Keratoconus cornea can also be imaged by SHG to reveal morphological alterations of the collagen. Third-Harmonic Generation (THG) microscopy is moreover used to image the cornea, which is complementary to SHG signal as THG and SHG maxima in this tissue are often at different places.
=== Special populations === In children and adolescents, fluoxetine is the antidepressant of choice due to tentative evidence favoring efficacy and tolerability. Evidence supporting an increased risk of major fetal malformations resulting from fluoxetine exposure is limited, although the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) of the United Kingdom has warned prescribers and patients of the potential for fluoxetine exposure in the first trimester (during organogenesis, formation of the fetal organs) to cause a slight increase in the risk of congenital cardiac malformations in the newborn. Furthermore, an association between fluoxetine use during the first trimester and an increased risk of minor fetal malformations was observed in one study. However, a systematic review and meta-analysis of 21 studies—published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Canada—concluded, "the apparent increased risk of fetal cardiac malformations associated with maternal use of fluoxetine has recently been shown also in depressed women who deferred SSRI therapy in pregnancy, and therefore most probably reflects an ascertainment bias. Overall, women who are treated with fluoxetine during the first trimester of pregnancy do not appear to have an increased risk of major fetal malformations." Per the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), infants exposed to SSRIs in late pregnancy may have an increased risk for persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn.

=== Seed germination === There are two types of seed within each pod – reddish-dark and dark (black). The ratio between these seeds varies from 1:20 to 1:5, with darker seeds outnumbering lighter seeds. Reddish-dark seeds have a thinner coat and they germinate earlier than black seeds that have not first been acid treated. "Dark seeds have a harder seed coat and require various pretreatments to ensure good germination rates." Although the seeds' usual germination rate has been reported at 75%, germination can be improved by scalding for about 7 minutes, then soaking seeds in hot water overnight prior to planting. Locust tree seedlings "can be established vegetatively in nursery beds by grafting or budding, or by rooting adult cuttings." These methods have shown good results in 11- to 25-year-old trees in Burkina Faso and Nigeria.
== Plants and bacteria == Although they lack neurons, systems responding to stimuli (analogous to the sensory system in animals with a nervous system, which includes the proprioception) have also been described in some plants (angiosperms). Terrestrial plants control the orientation of their primary growth through the sensing of several vectorial stimuli such as the light gradient or the gravitational acceleration. This control has been called tropism. A quantitative study of shoot gravitropism demonstrated that, when a plant is tilted, it cannot recover a steady erected posture under the sole driving of the sensing of its angular deflection versus gravity. An additional control through the continuous sensing of its curvature by the organ and the subsequent driving an active straightening process are required. Being a sensing by the plant of the relative configuration of its parts, it has been called proprioception. This dual sensing and control by gravisensing and proprioception has been formalized into a unifying mathematical model simulating the complete driving of the gravitropic movement. This model has been validated on 11 species sampling the phylogeny of land angiosperms, and on organs of very contrasted sizes, ranging from the small germination of wheat (coleoptile) to the trunk of poplar trees. Further studies have shown that the cellular mechanism of proprioception in plants involves myosin and actin, and seems to occur in specialized cells. Proprioception was then found to be involved in other tropisms and to be central also to the control of nutation.
The nitride anion (N3−) is the strongest π donor known among ligands (the second-strongest is O2−). Nitrido complexes are generally made by the thermal decomposition of azides or by deprotonating ammonia, and they usually involve a terminal {≡N}3− group. The linear azide anion (N−3), being isoelectronic with nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, and cyanate, forms many coordination complexes. Further catenation is rare, although N4−4 (isoelectronic with carbonate and nitrate) is known.

Collagen is a long, triple-helical structural protein. Collagen peptides are shorter fragments made by hydrolysis, which removes the helix and improves water solubility. The two materials differ in molecular size, viscosity, and behavior in solution.
No. Chain length, amino acid profile, and trace composition vary with raw material and hydrolysis conditions. Products from fish, bovine, and porcine sources can differ in odor, color, and thermal behavior. The term covers a broad family rather than one uniform substance.
Glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline are especially abundant. Hydroxyproline is uncommon in most other proteins and is often used as a marker for collagen content. The peptides also contain varying amounts of alanine, arginine, and other residues.
Size-exclusion chromatography is the standard method, often with refractive index or ultraviolet detection. Calibration uses known protein standards. SDS-PAGE can provide a rough range but is less precise.
